You love your adopted kitty or pooch and, if you’re like most pet owners, you have hundreds of photos to prove it. Those awesome pet pictures are worth a thousand words – and thousands of dollars through Share for Shelters. This Bayer Animal Health social media campaign celebrates the bond between pets and people. It also supports the animal shelters that helped make it possible because, through the 2016 campaign, Bayer contributed a total of $30,000 to shelters across the country.

Twenty-six shelters participated in the 2016 campaign by encouraging their communities to share photos of pets on social media using the hashtag #ShareforShelters. Dog and cat lovers delivered, posting more than 8,700 photos on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The three shelters that generated the highest number of photos shared through between September and November 2016 received a total of $30,000 from Bayer. Wayside Waifs in Kansas City, Mo., and Great Plains SPCA based in Merriam, Kan., earned the top two spots in the campaign and were awarded $15,000 and $10,000 respectively. The third place finisher was SPCA Tampa Bay in Tampa Bay, Fla., receiving $5,000.

The funding will be put to good use. Wining shelter Wayside Waifs plans to use the $15,000 contribution from Bayer to fund 3,000 spays and neuters, which is expected to cover almost all spays and neuters the shelter will perform in 2017.

“We are honored to receive the top contribution from the Bayer Share for Shelters campaign,” said Geoff Hall, President, Wayside Waifs. “This gift enhances Wayside Waifs’ success in saving thousands of abandoned, abused and homeless animals. In addition, the campaign celebrates the amazing bond that is created between pets and people.”

Keep snapping those photos that show how much you love your cats and dogs. You’ll get the chance to share them in support of pet adoption during future Share for Shelters campaigns.
