Bayer Animal Health and Adopt-a-Pet.com are on a mission to help shelters and rescues care for pets. Their Treated with Love program is committing $75,000 in flea and tick preventives to animal shelters and rescues in the United States in 2018 through awards and grants.

Paw Patrol Dayton in Ohio received a grant through the program this spring. This volunteer-run, non-profit organization rescues and re-homes dogs and helps educate their community on topics like spaying and neutering. Their grant for flea and tick preventive products will likely allow them to help even more animals.

"By having Seresto® and K9 Advantix® II readily available, we would be able to prevent fleas and ticks on the dogs in our care," says Melissa Adrian, a volunteer at Paw Patrol who fosters pets. "By keeping them current on all medications, their chances of adoption increase and, in turn, we have the ability to bring another dog into our care."

Adopt-a-Pet.com will choose additional grant recipients throughout the year. Those recipients could receive a variety of Bayer products, including Seresto® flea and tick preventives for dogs and cats, Advantage® II flea preventive for cats, and K9 Advantix® II flea, tick and mosquito preventive for dogs. Joining Paw Patrol as spring grant recipients were:

  • Charleston Animal Society in North Charleston, SC
  • The Haven in Fairhope, AL
  • Fulton County Animal Center in Rochester, IN
  • Loudon County Friends of Animals in Loudon, TN
  • Corner of Kindness in St. Bonifacius, MN

In addition to grants, Bayer also provided Seresto® collars for the Adopt-a-Pet.com People's Choice Award. Shelters and rescues rallied supporters on social media in an effort to collect the most votes.

Midwest Animal ResQ in Missouri received the most votes, so was awarded $4,000 in Seresto® flea and tick prevention. Coming in second through a random drawing among the finalists, Our Lil Bit of Heaven Animal Rescue and Sanctuary in Indiana received $1,000 in Seresto®.

Ashley Leavelle Fleener, a volunteer at Our Lil Bit of Heaven Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, says she had trouble containing her excitement when she found out her organization won. "I was posting thank-you's and contacting my husband to share the good news. If I would've been home I would've scared all the dogs screaming and jumping up and down like Publisher's Clearing House had just knocked on my door!"
